Every Mile Is Better Shared

No journey is ever truly solo. The most transformative moments in transportation have always been collective: the first shared ride, the first bus route, the first time a stranger became a neighbor because they were headed the same way. The philosopher Simone Weil, in Waiting for God (1950), wrote that attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity. In a taxi, attention takes a specific shape: the driver who knows the city by heart, the passenger who trusts a stranger with the destination, the silence between two people moving through the same night that is not awkward but companionable.

The taxi was never just a vehicle. It was the original sharing economy, before the term existed, before the apps, before the algorithms. The first motorized taxis appeared in London and Paris in the late 1890s, and from the beginning they were a social institution — the place where strangers met, where news traveled, where the city revealed itself through the windshield. Two people. One destination. The simplest contract in the world. And when "we" stands before it, the contract becomes a community.

The sociologist Georg Simmel, in his 1903 essay "The Metropolis and Mental Life," argued that the modern city produces a distinctive form of consciousness — the self-protective reserve of the urban dweller, the blase attitude that allows survival amid constant stimulation. The taxi is one of the few urban spaces where this reserve softens. The passenger who would never speak to a stranger on the street will speak to a taxi driver. The ride is a brief suspension of the urban armor.

we.taxi says it all before the first mile is driven. Every rival must explain what they do. This name explains it in two syllables, and makes everyone feel invited. In an era where mobility is being redefined, the one who offers belonging will always have more passengers than the one who merely offers a seat.
